Fall is the perfect time for gardening and lawn care. With the changing of leaves and temperatures, you can also enjoy a beautifully colorful yard during this time of year. A well-kept yard will not only look nice, but it’ll also make your home seem inviting.

Fall is the perfect season for gardening and lawn care. This time of year is also ideal for you to use chemical fertilizers and herbicides when applying them to your lawn. The weather is warm enough for the fertilizers to work correctly but not hot enough for them to burn your turf or destroy foliage. It is an excellent time of year to get rid of old leaves and weeds growing around your property because they can’t grow any faster than the cool weather will allow in April through July. Fall Lawn Care Tips & To Do’s

1. Weed control

In the fall, you can use Scotts Turf Builder Weed Preventer on your lawn. It will keep moss, dandelions, and other weeds from growing on your property. This weed preventer should be applied every two-to-three weeks until early spring to prevent any unwanted weeds from growing in the spring when you want your lawn to be experiencing rapid growth and development.

2. Fertilize

In the early fall months, you can apply a pre-emergent herbicide and fertilizer such as Milorganite. Milorganite is an excellent chemical fertilizer with weed killer properties that acts as a natural weed killer when used in the early fall months. Fall is the perfect time of year to apply Milorganite because it encourages rapid grass growth during winter.

3. Aerate

In the fall, you can aerate your lawn. Aeration allows water and air to reach grassroots for healthier and more robust growth. Moss, fungus, insects, nematodes, and disease will not be able to penetrate a healthy lawn that has good air circulation from aeration.

4. Core aerate

It would help if you used a swift core-aerating machine to remove cores from your lawn before applying Milorganite fertilizer in the early fall months. Removing these cores will help create more root development and allow room for water and air to reach the deeper roots of your turfgrass plants.

5. Hybridized turf

For the best results, you should use a hybridized grass seed mixture in September or October. A hybridized seed will grow stronger roots than an open-pollinated grass seed. Hybridized seeds will also develop a more dense turf grass that is less susceptible to disease.

6. Seed

You can use Merrill Millet Hybrid Seeding Mix on your lawn in late September or early October before the first frost of the year. This mix of Milorganite, canola, and millet seeds is excellent for putting natural food back into your law n’s soil with its 20 percent nitrogen.

7. Water

Watering your lawn regularly and deeply will give your property a much richer and healthier look. Deep watering is key to developing a deeper root system in your soil, making your lawn more resistant to disease, insects, and other harmful pests that can destroy the health of your turfgrass.

8. Over-seed

To help reduce the number of pests on your lawn and improve its health, you can over-seed parts of the property that contain a predominantly brown color from grass dying off from old age during late fall months. By doing this, you’ll also be adding shade to the area from new grass that is growing during these months.

9. Removing dead grass

If you notice your lawn is brown during the fall months, it means that your plants need to be replaced. Do not remove old grass because it is healthier for your property by allowing new grass to grow during the spring. If you decide to remove it, you should use a lawn roller or mower with a blade or shredder attachment to help cut down dead grass and weeds before putting new living grass seed in this area.

10. Mowing

During the fall months, you can ensure that your high-traffic areas are mowed at least once weekly. You should also ensure that your mower has three inches or less.

The fall is an excellent time for many reasons, and one of them is for the gardening and lawn care you can do in your yard. If you want to keep your lawn looking great, it’s an excellent idea to get into the habit of doing these things in the fall. This way, when spring comes around, you’ll have a healthy green lawn where everyone can enjoy walking and playing games on warmer days.
