Simple Ballet Steps Your Child Will Learn

Ballet is a wonderful and elegant type of dance. It requires time, learning, and lots of practice, making it a great activity for your child. As they start taking more ballet lessons, they’ll learn new steps which they can also try at home.

Ballet isn’t easy; it needs a lot of practice and patience. You can help your child learn the five basic steps by practicing with them at home! They’ll be more excited to try their ballet steps when you show interest. So, we’re going to share a list of basic steps that we teach our ballet students. You can then ask your child about these steps! Keep reading to find out how you can support your child’s ballet practice.

The Five Basic Steps

Most people might recognize a plié, but there are five essential steps that beginners usually learn first in ballet. Each step has its own way of placing the feet, arms, and hands.

First Step

In the first step, your child will put their heels together, toes pointing out to the sides, making a “V” shape. Their feet should turn out as much as they can. They need to bend their arm at the elbow and hold it in front of their body, with the hand near the thighs, making a shape like this — (). The wrists should curve so the hands point inwards.

Your child should practice turning their feet outward more in this step.

Second Step

To do the second step, your child should start in the first step, then move their feet apart, about as wide as their shoulders. The toes still point out. The arms are lifted to almost make a “T” shape. Remind your child to keep their arms slightly rounded forward, not pulled back.

Third Step

To practice the third step, start from the second step. Then, your child will slide their right foot in, so the right heel touches the inside of the left foot. They’ll move their arms back to the first step position, then lift their right arm out to the side, in line with their hips.

Fourth Step

For the fourth step, your child will begin from the third step and move their right foot a bit forward, leaving a small gap between their feet. Both arms move in this step. The right arm goes above the head, with the elbow slightly bent and wrist curved inwards. The left arm returns to the first step position. This step can be a bit hard, so encourage your child to try it a few times.

Fifth Step

From the fourth step, your child will turn their right foot out more and slide it back to touch the left foot, with the left foot behind the right but turned the other way. The toes of the right foot should touch the left heel, and vice versa. In this step, your child should try to keep their legs straight. Both arms go above the head, making a shape like the first step, but above. There should be a gap between the hands.
